Why did you join AKPSI?
I wanted to meet new people due to my social circle in Merced being relatively small at the time. I wanted to surround myself with people that did a lot at UC Merced. I did a lot in high school, however I stopped being as heavily involved once I went to college. I used to blame the Merced environment, but I knew I needed to put myself out there. My sister was in Alpha Phi Omega at the time, and she told me to check out greek life which eventually led me to Alpha Kappa Psi in Spring 2022.
What is your favorite AKPSI memory?
I have many favorite memories! My first ever retreat and banquet after I crossed over. It was a nice feeling to celebrate with everyone. Another memory is a Yosemite trip I had with my littles Armando (Alpha Delta) and Jonathan (Alpha Epsilon). I still remember Jonathan making PB&J sandwiches and the both of them organizing the trip. It was fun to get deeper with my littles especially as it’s harder to hang out nowadays due to me graduating back in 2023. The little moments & interactions I’ve had are more of my favorite memories.

What skills did you learn in AKPSI?
The biggest skill I learned is being professional when dealing with people. Especially now in the workplace, I’ll see some situations that could be avoided or awkward, but I handle them much better now. I used to lack skills with communicating with the older generation, and sometimes I may have came across as rude even though it was not my intention. AKPSI taught me to sound professional no matter who I’m talking to. Another skill was my presentation capabilities. I’m no longer shy to talk in a room or to show off my personality when presenting.
What is some advice you would give to PNMs?
Get the most out of it that you can! It’s easy to not wanna work on yourself (professionalism may seem boring). I don’t know anyone that regrets joining and putting in the work within AKPSI. Make sure to take advantage of everything, including social aspects. Really take advantage of resources, and give back when you can.

What do you do now after graduation?
After graduation, I obtained my substitute credential through the Merced County Office of Education. I quickly began looking for a position to start subbing. I eventually became an expanded learning educator at Le Grand Elementary School. I would transition lessons and help out at the end of core subjects such as math. I would then lead lessons using art. After I began researching into the type of job I truly wanted. Did I want to teach or go into an administration position such as a principal? This led to my new job as an Assisted Coordinator of the Expanded Learning Program. My main duties include in assisting in enrollment, communicating with parents, de-escalating behavioral issues, ensuring staff has everything they need, leading field trips, acting in as a grant manager, and more! Essentially, I’m the bridge between the expanded learning program and the school.
Future goals?
I want to obtain my Masters in Education (K-5 multi subject to be exact)! After doing my job researching and working an admin position right now, I realized my passion lies in the classroom. I want to be a K-5 Teacher. This summer, I plan on applying to teaching roles to teach while doing my masters.
